Interview with George Giakoumis
George Giakoumis was born in the village of Sithierounda on the island of Chios and migrated to Australia as a young child with his mother and older sister. Growing up in Australia, he contrasts the harsh environment of his strict early upbringing with the excitement, danger and enthusiasm of his career as a young merchant seaman during World War 2. George recounts his travels all over the world and his many colourful adventures of life at sea, including the sinking of his ship by a German U boat.
