OHA SA/NT believes in supporting excellence and innovation in oral history practice through state and national awards.

SA/NT awards

Since 2021-22, we have partnered with the History Council of South Australia (HCSA) to offer the Oral History Excellence Award as part of the HCSA Historian Awards.

This award recognises the best oral history presentation, in any format, that uses first-person interviews with individuals encompassing unique life experiences and memories. The nominee can be either an individual or a group.

Recent winners of this award include:

  • 2025 – Madeleine Regan
  • 2024 – Christeen Schoepf
  • 2023 – Ricky Coopman and Danni Reade
  • 2022 – Helen Meyer

National awards

Our national body, Oral History Australia (OHA), presents three awards in conjunction with its biennial conference.

The three awards are:

  • the Hazel de Berg Award for Excellence in Oral History – a lifetime achievement award, first awarded in 2006
  • the OHA Book Award and the OHA Media Award, which were first awarded in 2019.

OHA SA/NT has a strong record in this prestigious award. Hazel de Berg recipients from our SA/NT include:

  • 2017 Karen George
  • 2013 Francis Good
  • 2006 Beth Robertson (inaugural recipient).
