Madeleine Regan – award & new book

Congratulations to Madeleine Regan who was awarded the Excellence in Oral History Award at the History Council of South Australia’s award ceremonies in May.

Madeleine is a former long-serving secretary of OHA SA/NT. She was recognised for her long-standing commitment to documenting migrant histories through oral testimony, particularly her acclaimed project on Veneto market gardeners in Adelaide.

Madeleine’s work can be found on her website Veneto Market Gardeners 1927.

Madeleine has just published her book – ‘I buy this piece of ground here’ about an Italian market-gardener community in Adelaide from the 1920s to the 1970s. It has been published by ANU Press. This group biography examines the lives and work of a cohort of Italian migrant families from the Veneto region who arrived in Australia in the 1920s and formed a new community and identity as market gardeners in outer suburban Adelaide.

Madeleine’s book, which includes links to audio clips,  is available online at: http://doi.org/10.22459/IBPGH.2025. It is possible to download it for free using a few different formats.

Please see the flyer with a discount code for those who wish to purchase the book in hard copy.

Fantastic effort and well done, Madeleine.
