Workshop: Turning Oral History Interviews into a Prize-Winning Book

Non-fiction author Kristin Weidenbach will share her tips and advice on how to incorporate interview material and oral accounts into book-length works of memoir, family history and biography. Using her Reed Family History Book Award winner Growing up Moonta as a guide, Kristin will discuss how to structure your story, how to decide what material to put in and what to leave out, and making the best use of your interview time. The workshop will also cover quoting versus paraphrasing, preserving mannerisms of speech to build character on the page, and ethical questions around sensitive material.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to construct a short written piece from primary interview material provided.
